The ashes of the great leader
Comrade Deng Xiaoping were scattered over the sea
on March 2 in accordance with the wishes of Deng
and his family.
'97 Shanghai Excellent Children's
Plays Show starts in March. This 2-month event includes
about 12 famous plays for children. The opening
ceremony will be held on March 7.
Shanghai Customs handled
imports and exports worth US$52.9 billion last year,
ranking first in the country, the Chinese General
Customs Office recently announced.
More than 1,500 companies
throughout the country have sent their delegations
to attend the East China Trade Fair. This year there
are about 2,537 booths available.
The relocation of factories
in Shanghai has helped the city's downtown area
prosper. Last year, 450 local manufacturing enterprises
moved their facilities within the Inner-Ring Road
to the city's outskirts.
Shanghai Vice Major Jiang
Yiren, also the director of the '97 Shanghai International
Fashion Festival, said recently that the festival
will not only promote the fashion industry but also
push trade.
Shanghai's fourth expressway--running
from the suburban Songjiang County to Fengjing,
Jinshan County--is scheduled to open traffic next
year, city officials said recently. This expressway
will become part of the Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway,
which is under construction.
An international exhibition
for home appliances will be held in late October,
according to Miller Freeman, a French firm that
organized more than 300 shows worldwide last year.
The Shanghai Collegiate Internship
Center for International Business recently opened
at the Shanghai Institute of Foreign Trade in the
western part of the city.
